One Year on HubPages: Making Money and Reaching 100,000 Views
My relationship with HubPages
My relationship with HubPages recently surpassed it's one year anniversary. While the flame of our relationship no longer burns quite as bright, I am happy nonetheless. In our first year together, our relationship had it's ups and downs, but today, I can honestly say I am a better man because of it. I have learned a great deal about various topics, my writing and some internet-jargon like SEO (search engine optimization), tags, backlinks, affiliates and Adsense. While the strength of our relationship is not as strong as it is between some favorite hubbers like
it is growing. I believe honesty and sharing are crucial to strengthening a healthy relationship. After all, sharing is caring. And so, the purpose of this hub will be to share the details of my relationship with HubPages thus far.
Why I write for HubPages?
I write because it makes me happy. I write on HubPages to organize and share my ideas, stories, revelations and odd interests. After one year, I realized there are people who actually enjoy what I write. And that makes me even happier. I also realized that I could make some money. But how did I make money and get over 100,000 people to read my hubs in one year? Well, it wasn't easy.
Write good hubs and increase traffic
Write well and often. The most important thing for any hopeful hubber to remember is that quality hubs thrive. Write useful, original, thoughtful, informative and well-illustrated hubs, and the readers will come. Before you publish, it's important to write, rewrite, and rewrite what you just rewrote. This is often tedious, and is not easy. However, if you sincerely enjoy writing, and enjoy the topic you are writing about, it gets easier. Hubs between 700 to 1100 words are optimal. Keep hubs clear and concise. If you must write more to get your point across, consider turning your one hub into two or more, as in my hubs about the Solomon Islands.
Capsules. Add all types: images, videos, polls, charts, Amazon, graphs, news and RSS feeds. When adding image capsules, do not add them at the very top of your hub as this is prime real estate for Google advertisements. Make sure you aren't violating any copyright laws with the images or videos you add.
Link. Include any external links that you deem useful, but not too many. While you want to inform your readers, you also want to keep them reading your hub.
Share. I share my hubs on the social bookmarking sites She Told Me and StumbleUpon. They are both great ways to increase traffic. I also share my hubs on RedGage, a site that pays you for things you're already doing online. Email, Twitter and Facebook are also both good ways to share with your friends.
Again, if you write clear, concise, and well thought-out hubs, readers will notice, and the money will come. Which brings me to my next topic.

Take advice from veterans
Veteran hubbers are always willing to offer advice. Respect and listen to these hubbers in the same way Frodo does to Gandolf. Lord Of The Rings? Anyone? Anyways, the point is that you can learn a lot from the experienced hubber. The following are some hubs that I have bookmarked and used as a reference during my first year on HubPages.

Making money on HubPages
HubPages can be a full-time and moneymaking business. Any veteran hubber will tell you: there is a direct correlation between the amount of quality work you put in, to the amount of money you take out.
Google Adsense. This is one of the advertisement programs used by HubPages to help you earn money. Every time someone clicks on an advertisement displayed on your hub, you make money. Choosing good tags means good advertisements. Use the Google Traffic Estimator tool to choose ones with a high CPC (cost-per-click) and relatively low search volume (between 1,000 and 10,000). Stay away from adding lots of generic tags like books, music or art. Instead, choose 10 to 15 more specific tags. Try to include these tags in your title, summary, image captions, headings and text body as much as possible.
Amazon Affiliates. Earlier, I recommended adding Amazon capsules to your hubs. This is important. For me, the majority of my Amazon earnings are referred from my hub on Power Balance wristbands. When you refer someone from your hub to the Amazon website, you receive a percentage of whatever it is they purchase. In this case, if a $10.00 wristband sells, I receive around $.60 to $.70, or 6% to 7%. Even if the customer buys a completely different item hours later, you receive a percentage of that sale too. When choosing items to add, keep it simple. No one needs 20 options of blue yarn balls. Pick the best 3 to 5 balls of yarn, and be done with it.
The other advertising programs used by HubPages are with eBay, Kontera and Analytics. I don't use any of these, so I can't offer any advice.
HubPages is a continuous investment. If you are here to simply make money, you are in for a hard time. Hubbers love to tell you this...because it's true. The money is slow-coming and will not come easy. But if you enjoy writing, then write. The more hubs you write, the more you stand to earn. Eventually, the money will come, and keep coming.
